Still Chic

Teal v-neck sweater- ODCC (via Junior League) ~$ .25
White sleeveless button up- Ann Taylor (via Salvation Army) ~$3
Grey herringbone trousers- H&M ~$30
Pearl necklace- gift
Purple skimmer- Delias (gift)
TOTAL COST: $33.25

Some pieces in my wardrobe have managed to stick around for years, despite not focusing on quality. These wide leg trousers from H&M were purchased as far back as 9th grade! That’s right, I’ve had this pair of pants for just about 10 years. Not only do they still fit, but they’re still chic. There are classic pieces all women should own, and if you purchase smartly, they’ll be with your for years to come. I paired this wardrobe staple with one of newest (and most thrifty) finds, this super soft vintage sweater from the Junior League- snagged for just a quarter. The preppy result is professional without being unapproachable.

Classy Girls Wear Pearls

-->

Plaid Dress- American Living (via Salvation Army) ~$4
Dark Fuchsia Cardi- Merona (at Target) ~From mom
Oversized Sunglasses- Wet Seal ~$3
Pearl Necklace- Gift
Teal Barrel Bag- Merona (for Target) ~$30
Tan Sandal- Target ~$20
TOTAL: $57

Today is my homage to the blog run by the glamorous Sarah Vickers, Classy Girls Wear Pearls. If you have not seen her blog, please check it out! I am a lover of plaid and finding a plaid dress was a great excitement. The length is appropriate on me, which is tricky in a sundress, and this one far exceeds my fingertips! Hooray! Naturally, I paired it with a cardigan and my new bag. Sadly, the seasons are changing and this dress is getting packed up after this wear until next spring.

Complementary

Yellow Oxford- J Crew (via Salvation Army) ~$ .50
Purple Chino Shorts- Land N Sea (via TJ Maxx) ~$15
Oversized sunglasses- Wet Seal ~$3.00
Faux-Tortoise Link Necklace- JEWELIQ (gift, retails for $20)
Teal Barrel Bag- Merona (at Target) ~$30
White and Leather belt- Vintage (from mom)
Silver Gladiator Sandals- Bongo (via Marshall’s) ~$5
TOTAL COST: $53.50

When I buy a new piece I love, regardless of present season or the seasonality of the piece, I always want to wear it as soon as possible. When I snagged this J Crew Oxford on my last trip to 50% off Wednesday at SalVal, I swear the .50 price tag motivated me all the more to style it immediately. So right after washing, drying and ironing, I built an outfit around it. I usually stay away from wearing complementary color, which seems weird because by definition, they are complementary- they go well together. In my opinion, sometimes these colors can look a bit childish together, especially when the colors are worn in their most primary, crayon-like shade. Luckily, the shade of this J Crew top is a bit more pastel and the shorts are more vibrant, allowing for color contrast.
Can I mention again how much I love this necklace? I wish they were still selling it because now you all can’t buy one (SAD FACE). It’s so light weight and goes well with so many colors and styles. I’ve been loving necklaces styled over collars lately and the length on this is just perfect for that!

The End of Summer

Black and white stripped dress- Old Navy ~$20
Gold link necklace- Thrifted (Salvation Army) ~$9
Red braided belt- H&M ~$5
Teal barrel bag- Merona (at Target) ~$30
Black gladiator sandals- Ruff Hewn ~$13
TOTAL COST: $77

I have been waiting to wear this dress since I got it! It’s a dress I want to wear through multiple seasons, so I hurried to style it for one of the last warm days in September. I rolled up the long sleeves and belted it- still rocking bare legs, my friends! Once it’s colder, the sleeves will come down and I’ll be wearing leggings and a great pair of boots.
What do you all think of my new bag? A friend recently mistook it for a Coach bag! Precious, my dear, but I’d be afraid to own one of those! This is a $30 leatherette bag from Target that I featured in my Weekend Watch post. Of course, I styled this look using my beloved black gladiator sandals. Summer is now officially over, so I only have a little bit more time with these lovely sandals.

Skinny & Spotted

Green polka dot sweater- Old Navy ~$25
White sleeveless button up- Ann Taylor (via Salvation Army) ~$3
Dark wash skinny jeans- Papaya (via Consignment) ~$4.50
Faux tortoise link necklace- JEWELIQ (gift)
Red loafers- Talbots (via Goodwill) ~$6
TOTAL COST: $38.50

Dark denim skinnies, loafers, and a polka dot sweater- this is one of my favorite outfits yet. This Old Navy sweater is an EXCELLENT piece, if you don’t own one yet, seriously check into it! I loved it so much after just a few wears that I went back and bought a second one in white with black polka dots. I could seriously sing it’s praises for 6 more paragraphs, but I’ll spare you. Just go to ON and try it on.
You know how with some trends, you think they’re terrible and you can’t wait for them to end or you liked it at the start, but you tire of it? I hope I NEVER feel that way about skinny jeans. Skinny jeans salvaged my relationship with denim! I barely wore jeans in HS. Just around my senior year, skinny jeans began their popularity reign. I hopped on board and never looked back. I dress them up or down and wear them with every color and print imaginable. Thrifting for jeans is tedious but no more than it is at a regular retail store. In fact, remember that thrifted jeans have already been washed and worn, making the fit when you try them on the fit you are going to have once you take them home and wash them. No shrinking. It also gives you exposure to a very wide array of brands. I’ve never heard of Papaya but it turns out the brand suits my body type and I’d never have found it had it not been for thrifting! Okay, end preach.

Flexing my Fashion Muscles

Pink polo- Jimmyz ~$20
Khaki skirt- GAP (via Salvation Army) ~$3
Sunglasses- Wet Seal ~$4
Gold chain link necklace- Thrifted (Salvation Army) ~$9
Brown leatherette skinny belt- H&M ~$5
Red loafers- Talbots (via Goodwill) ~$6
TOTAL COST: $47

Does anyone remember Jimmyz? It was some sub-company of Aeropastale… (Trying to compete with A&F?) Anyway, I’ve been holding onto this polo since HIGH SCHOOL. I wish it didn’t have that “factory distressing” that was so popular during that time, but eh- it’s survived this long. This khaki skirt is a staple piece and I can’t wait to mix, and remix it through all seasons. As you can see, it was quite warm on this day (despite wearing a sweater dress just the day before). This crazy fall weather is certainly flexing the muscles of my wardrobe. Maybe I’ll be wearing my snow suit tomorrow- Who knows!

Yo-Yo Weather

Purple sleeveless button up- Eddie Bauer (via Goodwill) ~$3.50
Off white cardigan- Vera Wang for Kohls ~$5 (on sale)
Blue printed capris- LOFT (via Goodwill) ~$4
Tan sandals- Target ~$20
TOTAL COST: $32.50

With the weather yo-yoing like crazy, I am forced to bounce back and forth between summer and fall-ish outfits. These capris are a recent purchase, even though I vowed to switch my focus to fall clothes, I couldn’t resist these great LOFT capris. I paired them with the purple top in an effort to bring out the periwinkle detailing in the print a bit more. My go-to style with summer clothes is generally preppy. However, my style becomes a bit more diverse in fall and winter when I can do a bit more layering- which switches it up a bit. Stay tuned to see all my fall and winter clothes that have been hiding!

Preppy Pineapple

Striped Pineapple tank- J Crew (via a store in OBX) ~$15 (old)
Khaki chinos- J Crew (via Salvation Army) $3
Red braided belt- H&M ~$5
Tan sandals- Target ~$20
TOTAL COST: $43

Oh J. Crew- how I love thee, but NOT your in store pricing! AH! Of course the J Crew outlet exists, but did you know that the merchandise is not “leftovers” but a totally different line that is made of lower quality material? Yeah. Sad days. I love outlets because I love deals, but I do not love this system. I would much rather pour over rack after rack at Goodwill or Salvation Army to find the great deal. It’s so rewarding. Like these shorts, for example. I found these on a 50% off Wednesday at SalVal and hoped they’d fit. They’re a bit longer than I usually wear, but still shorter than a Bermuda cut, so I don’t consider them too “mature” for me. This tank top is a favorite of mine, but how often can one wear a sequined striped pineapple top? Not very often. Wish I had it in watermelon… But pineapple is such a great looking fruit.

Church Lady

White button up- Express (via Goodwill) ~$3.50
Pink cable knit vest- Tommy Hilfiger (via Salvation Army) ~$2.50
Green leopard skirt- Talbots (via Goodwill) ~$5
Gold link necklace- Thrifted (via Salvation Army) ~$9
Braided belt- H&M ~$5
Pink loafers- Talbots (via Goodwill) ~$6
TOTAL COST: $31

I’m so proud of this outfit- it’s all thrifted, except the belt. All the pieces are quality brands and I don’t have to tell you how expensive this outfit would be if I’d purchased them all new. I love mixing colors, textures and patterns. I cannot wait to find new ways to mix this vest into my wardrobe.
I would like to draw special attention to the necklace. These gold chains are so popular right now and I’ve found them for you at a variety of price points.

Exceptions

Red, pink and orange tank- Cable & Gauge (via Junior League) ~$ .10
Pink shorts- Tommy Hilfiger outlet ~$25
White and leather belt- Vintage (from Mom)
Gold slip on- TOMS (gift, retails for $54)
TOTAL COST $25.10

Here’s another summery piece I picked up recently and rushed to wear before fall renders these pieces worthless. When I am thrifting, no matter where, I have standards for the pieces I buy. I try to select quality pieces from brands with which I am familiar: Banana Republic, Gap, J Crew, Express, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, etc. This shirt, however, was not produced by one of these retailers. But, dear readers, there are things called “exceptions.” For example, when I get to fill a paper grocery bag with clothes for A DOLLAR and the approximate “cost” of each piece I selected is approximately TEN CENTS- I may be less picky about the brands. While I did mange to get a piece each from Gap and Lands’ End, the pattern and shape of this top urged me to purchase despite lacking label.

Hampton's on a Dime

Navy and white striped tee- Gap (via Junior League) ~$ .10
White chino shorts- J Crew (via Goodwill) ~$5
Braided brown leather belt- Vintage (from Mom)
Gold and pearl strand necklace x2- Consignment ~$6
Kelly green slip on shoes- TOMS shoes ~$54
TOTAL COST: $65.10

When I saw this shirt on the rack at Junior League I was shocked- a perfectly good Gap tee shirt that hadn’t sold during the 50% or 75% off sales? By the time I’d finished filling my bag, my items were about ten cents a piece, perhaps less. This top is a classic- navy with skinny white stripes. I love the nautical look and knew this top would be perfect. I paired it with my J Crew white chino shorts, a brown leather belt and volia! Instant Hamptons. Having never actually been there (ahem…) This is what I imagine the classic Hamptonites look like.
By the way- are you SO bored of me wearing these gold and pearl strand necklaces? Because I am not yet bored of wearing them! I am generally not a jewelry wearer, but there is so little risk associated with these necklaces. They aren’t family heirlooms nor were they expensive. The delicate silhouette makes them wearable with both dressy and casual pieces. I also this a bold piece, the the J Crew bubble necklace in white, would pair excellently with this look- definitely taking it to another level of dressiness.

Snag of the Season (& 50th Post!)

White ¾ gauzy top- Hollister Co. ~$20
Purple tank top- H&M ~$7
Pink chino shorts- Tommy Hilfiger Outlet ~$25
Gold and pearl strand necklace- Consignment ~$3
White and gold skinny belt- Goodwill (no brand) ~$2
Black gladiators- Ruff Hewn (via BonTon) ~$13
TOTAL COST: $70

For a blog that is about thrifting and saving money, this outfit is looking kind of expensive. However, it was a put together look and I decided to document it. You see, I haven’t been so into thrifting my whole life. My focus has really expanded in the past 3 years and both the top and bottom of this outfit are more than 3 years old. The true sales high light of this outfit are my new sandals. You know those $5 silver gladiators I’ve been wearing all summer? They’re still alive (no need to worry) but the quality isn’t great and I’m just not sure how much longer they are going to make it. Enter these shoes. BonTon is having a huge sale and I hunt down these babies, originally $89- What a snag! They are comfortable and stylish. I LOVE those tassel details! I know I only have a few months to bond with them before they go into fall/winter hibernation, but until then- they will be my go-to shoe!

Gem Tones

Emerald green tee- Banana Republic (via Consignment) ~$3
Purple chino shorts- Land N’ Sea (via TJ Maxx) ~$15
White and leather belt- Vintage (from mom)
Gold and pearl strand necklace- Consignment ~$3
Dark pink loafers- Talbots (via Goodwill) ~$6
TOTAL COST: $27

I love purple and green together, so I was excited to pair this new top with my purple chinos. My love for color extends to my shoes as well, as I selected my rose pink loafers. Of course, this beautiful emerald/teal top is going to transition perfectly to fall. I love gem tones, but don’t own many pieces in the classic gem shades. This top really jumped out when I thrifted it at a local consignment shop about a month ago as something I did not already have. I am often guilty of buying in multiples when it comes to classic staples. Of course, using thrifting as 60-70% of my shopping, this can take time. I cannot wait to find more shirts like this one my BR. It’s cotton, soft, stretch, and easy to wear, but so much more visually interesting than a regular tee-shirt.

Jealous of J. Crew

Grey Jumper- Criss Cross (via Goodwill) ~$5
White button up- Express (via Goodwill) ~$3.50
Black oxford shoes- Fioni (via Goodwill) ~$5
Polka dot socks- Urban Outfitters (maybe?- Old)
TOTAL COST: $13.50

I have to give it up to J. Crew. While they produce a lot of classic, basic items, there are also show stopping ones. Jenna Lyons (President and Creative Director) has excellent instincts about pairing these pieces into truly amazing ensembles, which are really more like works of art. Like this little gem, for example…

So ridiculous, so quirky- I don’t think that most J Crew shoppers would wear this look as is, but this look, and others, speak to my (at times) off-beat sense of personal style. Today, I took a much more simple inspiration of J. Crew’s current line up. While perusing the J. Crew website, I came across this grey jumper over a white button up. I was drawn to the simplicity and familiarity of the look. Don’t I own a jumper just like that? Sure do! Here it is and yes, it has pockets just like the J. Crew version. I thrifted this little ditty for just $5, compared to the J. Crew look-a-like price of $188- that comes to a virtual savings of $183.
Want more look-a-likes?

Here are some polka dot pieces- a super hot trend throughout the new J Crew catalog. The left is an Old Navy dress for $44 (available online only) while on the right is a similar looking J. Crew sweater for $268. Those base colors look almost identical to me… Hrm…Coincidence?

Old Navy also just released 3 sweaters that look extremely similar to the J Crew. The major differences? Neck line (crew v. boatneck), J Crew’s version has a cute button closure in the back, the scale of the polka dots, and the price ($24 v. $268). I bought the best dupe of the group, the green one. Check them out!

Immediate Yes

Chartreuse tank- Gap Outlet ~$10
Bright pink ¾ cardigan- Gap Outlet ~$20
White and poppy print skort- Ann Taylor LOFT (via Salvation Army) ~$5
Tan sandals- Target ~$20
Deer necklace- Etsy (gift)
TOTAL COST: $55

I love bright colors and pieces that make a statement- I think that this outfit communicates that idea. This Ann Taylor LOFT poppy print skort (for those of you confused, like my computer’s spell check function, skirt + short= skort) was an immediate yes. Of my 12 Ann Taylor/LOFT pieces, 9 were thrifted. It’s a brand I’ve come to appreciate much more as I get older and my fashion orientation switches from student to professional. Some brands just fit your body right, and Ann Taylor is one of those brands for me. Unfortunately, buying new from them on a regular basis is not an option. I still window shop- in fact, Ann Taylor has been selling these lace shell tanks (see below) for months now and they’re so fabulous, but for $98, I just can’t justify it (not even a little).

I also wanted to share my manicure for the week. It’s OPI Hot & Spicy with China Glaze Fast Track (Hunger Games collection). It went quite well with the orange hues in the skort.

Labeled Lady

Silk teal sweater- Ann Taylor (via Junior League) ~$7
Purple sleeve-less button up- Eddie Bauer (via Goodwill) ~$3.50
White shorts- J Crew (via Goodwill) ~$5
Dark pink suede loafers- Talbots (via Goodwill) ~$6
TOTAL COST: Approx. $21.50

Nearly all my favorite preppy, classic designers are represented in this outfit (most notably missing is Banana Republic). That stereotypical Hamptons vibe is totally my aesthetic in the summer. Goodwill and other thrift stores in my area have been so good when it comes to label quality. I have seen a lot of really pricy brands and that makes me happy, especially at Goodwill. This means someone likely purchased this quality item for full price, owned it and then donated it- that is charity people. Building an adult, grown-up work wardrobe can be expensive (especially when one is a student) but it doesn’t have to be. This sweater is 100% silk and manufactured by Ann Taylor. I want to wear it with everything I own- it’s sure to be a favorite this fall and winter.
I decided not to wear any accessories with this outfit (besides my faux diamond earrings) and instead, to do some online browsing for appropriate jewelry. I picked 3 websites and found two necklaces and two bracelets/watches that I thought might each pair well with this preppy look.
(Top L, moving clockwise)

Jewel IQ Tortoise Link Necklace: This is my statement option. I have been coveting this preppy staple for a while- just waiting for the right incarnation. I found it here, at Jewel IQ, where shipping is free on all orders and no individual piece is more than $25. HOLLER! I love this necklace. Excellent length, good coloration, and I like the change in link size. Jewel IQ is also carrying those ever-popular bauble necklaces- So good! It’s on my wish list! Just waiting for the right color.
Stella and Dot Gold strand Necklace: This is the understated option. I love gold and teal together, it has a very luxe feel to it. I’m rarely understated, but this piece is a yes for me.
Fossil Pearl Banded Watch: I originally went searching for a tortoise band watch from Fossil that a friend of mine has- it wasn’t on the website but this beauty was. How classy. For me, it’s like a pearl bracelet and a watch all rolled into one. The bracelet length sleeve of the sweater (not intended to be, I’m sure- I just have extra long arms) exposes the wrist perfectly for a statement piece like this.
Stella and Dot Gold Spike Bracelet: Again, gold and teal are totally biffs. I have been eyeing up this little number on many of the fashion blogs I read, including J’s Everyday and I think it is an excellent combination of edgy and classy. I’ve seen it layered very effectively as well, so that increases its versatility.

One Blouse Two Ways

Black printed blouse- Ship N Shore (via Goodwill) ~$3.50
Grey button pencil skirt- Ann Taylor LOFT (via Goodwill) ~ $5
White pants- Ralph Lauren (via Marshall’s) ~$25
Grey pointy flats- Nine West (via Goodwill) ~$5
TOTAL COST:
Outfit One ~$11.50
Outfit Two ~$33.50

I love finding versatility in my clothes. My plethora of secretary blouses can be worn in both dressy and casual ways. In look one, I paired my blouse with this excellent find, an Ann Taylor LOFT skirt I thrifted. The original buttons were plain so I swapped them out for these beautiful silver crest ones. In the photo, both pieces look like the same color, but there is more definition and separation when you see it in real life. I went for a more relaxed look in my second outfit. I would have never thought to wear them untied until I saw this photo from a favorite blog of mine, Pink Peonies (http://www.thepinkpeonies.com/).

I also love the white pants with the dark top. This blouse looks plain from far away, so I included a close up of the print.

It’s an interesting one and I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be, but I love the incorporation of orange and blue as small detail colors.

Oops, I Did It Again (& Again)

My favorite seasons for fashion are fall and winter. Shops like Goodwill and Salvation Army offer some out of season items at all times, which means I can be collecting special pieces all year round, regardless of the present season. At times, I find myself getting hooked on a specific type of garment. Recently, that piece is the secretary blouse. Three years ago, while participating in a Goodwill “up-cycle”/re-fashioned” fashion show, I was assigned this beautiful outfit…(check out that fabulous hat and those heels!)

I fell in love with the silk paisley blouse and purchased it (for $3.50) after the show. My sense of fashion was a bit different in 2010 and I hardly wore this top. However, it planted the seed for what has truly turned into an obsession with the secretary (or tie-neck) blouse. My interest in this garment really accelerated after I purchased this pink, purple, and blue paisley blouse.

I received many compliments on it and loved the special feel that only a vintage piece can give. I wanted more and so my collection began. Presently, I have 9 secretary blouses (varying sleeve length) that were all thrifted. These tops are on trend for the upcoming fall season, however, you’re not going to find them for a better price or more special looking than thrifting a vintage one.
Case and point?

(Left: Saks Fifth Ave, Right: Equipment {via Last Call: Neiman Marcus})
I like both of these blouses but with price tags of $69 & $139 respectively, I wouldn’t dare buy either. My entire collection of 9 secretary blouses (the remaining 8 pictured below) cost me around $32. If I have to choose between 9 different options for $32 or one blouse for $69 (or even $20 at a store like Forever 21)- it’s not really a fair fight :)

They’re silky and light-weight enough for late summer/early spring and with a cardigan, sweater vest or blazer, they work as a layering piece all winter long. I should probably stop buying them, but I could go for a few more in solid colors- as you can see, I only have one (the silky champagne blouse- all the rest are printed, though it’s hard to see). Maybe black or purple?
Tell me readers, What do you think of this trend? Do you have a favorite among my 9 blouses? What are your style suggestions for this trend? Comment or email me at BsGoodwillHunting@gmail.com

Remix and Repeat

White Polo- Ralph Lauren (via Marshall’s) ~$20
Multicolored floral Capri- Jones New York Signature (via Goodwill) ~$5
Baby blue skinny belt- Goodwill (no label) ~$1
Rose suede loafers- Talbots (via Goodwill) ~$5
TOTAL COST: Approx. $31

I have been searching and searching for the perfect pair of floral patterned Capri or crop pants as they are on my wish list. Goodwill and Salvation Army seemed like pretty hopeless options because new trends take a while to make it to thrift stores. However, my mother found this pair in our local Goodwill and I love them. The colors are lovely and vibrant. I’m also so pleased with how many different styling options these Capris give me! I did a quick once-over of my closet and found 6 additional pairings!  I chose to keep the accessories as consistent as possible (although I could have had a blast with different shoes, belts, and accessories) so that the focus is on the Capris and the different top colors and shapes I utilized.
(L-R top, then bottom)

This orange (the color didn’t really photograph accurately) v-neck tee as well as the yellow tank top are both casual ways to wear these capris. I also wanted to find a print-on-print option. Print mixing is a true art. I thought that a wide striped top would be an excellent compliment to the random floral of the capris. Using colors found in the capris, I selected this coral and white, and this chartreuse and white tee. I am pleased with the pairing! I’m not sure that any other print, besides a stripe, will work though. Any ideas, readers? I finished up with a popular selection this year- the chambray top. Mine has ruffles (YAY) and a rolled sleeve. I think it the chambray was a bit lighter in color, it would be even more successful. Finally, I did an untucked look (GASP!) with this lilac button up. Even though purple is not in these capris, the tone of this top goes with the tone of the floral.

Ebay Highlights

Dear Readers,
As you may know, my mother runs an Ebay store (http://tinyurl.com/eBayCraftmom). The main focus of our store is offering quality brands at affordable prices. I wanted to highlight some of the great stuff there right now.  (From top left, moving clockwise)
